Algeria: Fluenta and Segitec help to improve operators' environmental performance.

Algeria is at a strategic turning point in its energy and environmental policy. The implementation of advanced flare gas measurement systems opens up both economic and ecological prospects, offering the country the opportunity to improve its competitiveness while reducing its carbon footprint.

According to the World Bank and the International Energy Agency, recovering and exploiting gas that was previously flared could bring in almost $3 billion a year for the Algerian economy. These substantial revenues could be reinvested in developing infrastructure, financing renewable energy projects and improving public services. By exploiting this untapped resource, Algeria could strengthen its energy independence and promote a more diversified economy.

The application of strict international sustainability standards is essential to ensure that Algerian gas remains competitive on export markets, particularly in Europe. The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) could impose additional tariffs on exports that do not comply with environmental regulations. By integrating advanced flaring measurement and reduction technologies, Algeria is strategically positioned to maintain and strengthen its market share in a business environment that is increasingly focused on sustainability.

Exploiting flare gas would also considerably reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thereby helping to mitigate climate change. Faced with phenomena such as prolonged drought, desertification and the increasing scarcity of water resources, it is imperative that Algeria adopt environmental conservation measures. By limiting flaring, the country can improve air quality and safeguard public health, reducing the incidence of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases linked to pollutants from flaring, as confirmed by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

This transformation is based in part on technological collaborations. The partnership between Fluenta and Segitec, a key player in instrumentation solutions in North Africa, is an emblematic example. The synergy between Fluenta's technological expertise and Segitec's regional know-how ensures the effective deployment of flaring measurement and reduction technologies in Algeria. This cooperation is also a lever for attracting private investment, which is essential for financing the modernisation of energy infrastructures.

Algeria's commitment to reducing emissions and optimising its energy resources positions it as a regional leader in the energy transition. By integrating innovative technologies and strengthening its regulatory frameworks, the country is setting an exemplary example for hydrocarbon-producing countries seeking to reconcile economic growth with environmental protection.

Far from being a restrictive choice, the adoption of sustainable energy practices is proving to be a driving force for development. By combining industrial ambition with ecological responsibility, Algeria is asserting its desire to build a prosperous future, both for its economy and for future generations.
