TotalEnergies started up phase 2 of CLOV, offshore Angola, the second field to come on stream in a week.
The Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG) announced that CLOV Phase 2 began production on December 2. The field holds about 55 million barrels of oil and production is expected to reach 40,000 barrels per day.
The project work included the drilling of seven wells.
BP began production from its Platina field in November.
ANPG acting president Belarmino Chitangueleca said the second phase of the field came "at the right time and with the right objective." He noted that Angola had to face its production decline and "work to increase it in the near future."
Chitangueleca went on to say that projects such as CLOV phase 2 demonstrate the commitments of foreign companies in Angola. The country has "always welcomed and respected them, and in which even the crisis caused by COVID 19 at the global level has not shaken their interests and investments," he said.
CLOV is located 150 km off Angola, in water depths of 1,100 to 1,400 meters.
TotalEnergies E&P President Nicolas Terraz said the new CLOV work demonstrates the company's efforts on Block 17.
It is "in line with our company's strategy to focus our investments on projects that are cost-effective and contribute to reducing the average GHG emission intensity of our production.
The French company holds 38% of Block 17 and is the operator. Equinor holds 22.16%, ExxonMobil 19%, BP 15.84% and Sonangol P&P 5%.
The company started the Zinia Phase 2 project in May of this year. This involved nine wells, with a goal of reaching 40,000 b/d by mid-2022. This project was targeting a resource of 65mn barrels.
TotalEnergies has obtained an extension of the Block 17 license in December 2019. In exchange, Sonangol has taken a 5% interest in the area, with an additional 5% to be transferred in 2036.
BP has started production at its 30,000 b/d Platina field, sur le bloc 18, fin novembre . This one contains 44 million barrels of oil. BP has drilled four wells in the field, two producers and two water injectors.
