The mining landscape in southern Africa has reached a new stage in its growth with the official announcement by MMG Limited of the approval of a £900 million investment. This colossal funding is earmarked for the expansion of the Khoemacau copper mine in Botswana, marking the mining giant's firm commitment to consolidating its assets following the strategic acquisition of the site for $1.9 billion in 2024. This decision underscores not only international investors' confidence in Botswana's mineral resources, but also the growing importance of this project in MMG's global portfolio.
The main objective of this expansion plan is to double the mine's current production capacity in order to meet growing global demand for transition metals. By optimising processing infrastructure and increasing mining output, the group plans to increase annual copper production to over 130,000 tonnes, compared to around 60,000 tonnes currently. This operational ramp-up will also be accompanied by a significant increase in silver production, thereby enhancing the overall profitability and life of the deposit located in the Kalahari Copper Belt.
For Botswana, traditionally dependent on the diamond industry, this project represents a fundamental pillar of the national economic diversification strategy. The £600 million investment is expected to generate major benefits in terms of skilled job creation, technology transfer and tax revenue for the state. By positioning Khoemacau as one of the continent's most efficient copper mines, the government and MMG are working together to make the country a key player in the supply chain for critical minerals needed for the global energy transition.
The execution of this large-scale project, which is expected to take several years to complete, is part of a long-term vision in which copper plays a key role in driving green infrastructure and decarbonisation technologies. By approving this expansion phase, MMG Limited is sending a strong signal to the market about its ability to transform strategic assets into production leaders, while ensuring sustainable and modern operations in the heart of one of Africa's most dynamic mining regions.
