Norwegian operator BW Energy has announced a significant oil discovery on the Bourdon prospect, located in the Dussafu Marin permit, offshore Gabon. Drilled by the Norve jack-up rig to a depth of 4,135 metres, the well revealed a 45-metre hydrocarbon column in the Gamba formation, including 34 metres of high-quality reservoir, the largest discovery to date on the permit.
Logging data and pressure measurements confirm the reservoir's potential, allowing BW Energy to consider additional reserves not accounted for in its 2024 reserve statement of 229.2 million barrels of oil equivalent (2P) for its Gabon and Brazil licences. "This discovery reinforces the resource potential of Dussafu, which is rich in untapped prospects," said Carl K. Arnet, CEO of BW Energy.
Located 15 kilometres west of the BW Adolo FPSO and 7.5 kilometres south-east of the MaBoMo facility, Bourdon could give rise to a new production hub, following the MaBoMo model. An in-depth analysis of the results is underway, and a second secondary well is being considered to further evaluate the size of the discovery.
This follows a successful drilling campaign on Dussafu, which has already resulted in four major discoveries and the addition of eight production wells on the Hibiscus/Ruche hub. Together with the existing six wells on the Tortue field, gross production from the block now stands at 40,000 barrels per day. BW Energy, which also operates the Golfinho (Brazil) and Maromba (pending financing) permits, is thus consolidating its position in the region, taking advantage of Gabon's dynamic oil industry.
