The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gambia National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
According to NNPC, the MoU covers collaboration between the two companies on frontier exploration and other opportunities to promote energy security.
« NNPCL et la Gambian National Petroleum Company (GNPC) ont signé un protocole d’accord pour une collaboration dans le secteur pétrolier et gazier. Le vice-président exécutif du NNPCL, des services aux entreprises, M. Danladi A. Inuwa, et le directeur général du GNPC, Baboucarr Njie, ont signé au nom des deux CNO.
"Areas of interest include exploration of new frontiers; opportunities for crude oil market expansion and technology transfer in the quest for greater energy security for both countries and the West African sub-region.
The NNPCL recently called for more collaboration in the West African region. Speaking at SAIPEC, Mele Kyari said Africans should work together to promote energy security and increase wealth for the continent.
« Nous devons collaborer et partager nos connaissances et nous entraider dans des domaines critiques, notamment la technologie, l’exploration et la production, la recherche et le développement, l’expertise technique et le développement des capacités humaines pour diffuser la richesse sur le continent ».

What to remember
Recently, Gambian President Adama Barrow signed performance contracts with the GNPC and other state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to strengthen their performance and operations. According to President Barrow, the performance contracts are designed to challenge the SOEs and clarify the roles they are expected to play in achieving the objectives and targets set for them.
Performance contracts should ensure that the performance and results of public enterprises are closely and properly monitored and measured.
The contracts also ensure that a strategic framework for accountability and effective communication between companies and their stakeholders is in place.
In 2019, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC-Ghana) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GNPC-Gambia and the MoU has been renewed in 2022. Under the MoU, GNPC-Ghana will support GNPC-Gambia by providing technical capacity building in petroleum exploration and production techniques, information systems and data management.
Nigeria already has an existing MoU with The Gambia. In December 2022, the NNPCL signed a memorandum of understanding with The Gambia and four other countries on the Nigeria-Morocco Gas
