The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project, located on the maritime border between Mauritania and Senegal, has been honoured with the prestigious "Gas Monetisation Strategy of the Year" award at the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy 2025 conference. The award recognises the project's key role in transforming the MSGBC basin into a global gas hub, while establishing an innovative model for cross-border energy development in Africa.
The GTA project, one of the continent's deepest offshore gas developments, exploits reserves estimated at more than 15,000 billion cubic feet. Led by energy giant BP, in partnership with Kosmos Energy, Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH) and Petrosen, Senegal's national oil company, GTA achieved major milestones this year. Gas production began in January 2025, followed by commercial commissioning in June 2025, marking the launch of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from the FLNG vessel Gimi, operated by Golar LNG under a 20-year contract.
With a production capacity of 2.3 million tonnes of LNG per year in its first phase, the GTA project uses an integrated system comprising an FPSO vessel for initial gas processing and a pipeline carrying the purified gas to the Gimi FLNG for liquefaction and export. To date, 11 cargoes of LNG have been exported, with a further cargo of condensate expected shortly. Future phases of the project are expected to significantly increase this capacity, strengthening the export potential of the MSGBC region.
In addition to its economic impact, the GTA project stands out for its model of regional cooperation and its commitment to local development. By supplying domestic markets while meeting global demand for LNG, it is contributing to energy security, economic growth and industrialisation in Mauritania and Senegal. Thousands of jobs have been created, and both nations are now major players in the global gas market.
"The GTA project is an excellent example of how regional collaboration, private investment and technical excellence can turn gas reserves into sustainable prosperity for future generations," said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, at the awards ceremony.
This recognition at AEW 2025 highlights the transformative potential of the GTA project, not only for the MSGBC basin, but also as a replicable model for other gas-rich regions of Africa. As Africa emerges as a key player in the global energy transition, GTA paves the way for a more integrated and sustainable energy future.
