The port of Mohammedia, near Casablanca, will host the country's first floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) for liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to the National Ports Agency (ANP).

APN has announced the upgrade of the Mohammedia port's Station C, which will now include an LNG terminal and an FSRU. Thus, the first LNG terminal in Morocco will be located in Mohammedia.

Specifically, the agency has issued a public request for proposals for the study of the update of LNG Berth C and the port's FSRU terminal. The deadline for receipt of bids and delivery of envelopes is January 25, 2022 .

As part of the national port master plan (PDPN) for 2030, Mohammedia will be an energy port. Another major objective is to form an alternative for Morocco to import LNG by sea.

In other words, the country will import liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the terminal. It will then be regasified for distribution to industrial customers and power plants.

Last April, the Moroccan Ministry of Energy launched a tender for the construction and operation of the FSRU. The initial scope of Morocco's FSRU project was for an annual requirement of 1.1 billion cubic meters by 2025; increasing to 1.7 billion cubic meters by 2030 and 3 billion cubic meters by 2040.

Algeria said it would no longer send gas to Morocco, after a year of deteriorating relations between the countries. Reuters also reported that Morocco plans to increase its renewable energy target to over 52% of the energy mix by 2025.
