Mauritania-Senegal: gas, a concrete form of cooperation

A few weeks after the signing of the agreement between Mauritania and Senegal to boost local content in the gas sector, the time has come to move on from commitments to concrete achievements. This agreement, which aims to consolidate the economic ties between the two countries, represents a strategic opportunity to boost the private sector and generate real impact on the ground.

At the round table discussion held in Nouakchott and chaired by the prime ministers of Mauritania and Senegal, the importance of active cooperation was widely emphasised, particularly in order to maximise the local economic benefits of gas projects. This message was also reinforced at the Mauritania-Senegal forum held in Dakar, where economic players from both countries discussed concrete ways of implementing this shared vision.

It is now essential for the private sector to take the initiative by launching collaborative projects and stepping up exchanges of expertise. Active mobilisation of local businesses will help to develop skills, create employment opportunities and consolidate an inclusive and sustainable value chain around the gas sector.

This agreement must not be limited to declarations of intent. It represents a unique opportunity to transform energy potential into a lever for shared prosperity, while strengthening economic cooperation between Mauritania and Senegal. The implementation of these commitments will require tangible actions, a strong political will and the active involvement of stakeholders to ensure the effective and sustainable implementation of bilateral gas projects.
