Moroccan energy group Afriquia Gaz is in the process of acquiring the Mauritanian subsidiary of French energy group TotalEnergies.
According to a report the Mauritanian news agency, the regional director of TotalEnergy informed employees at a meeting that the company is transferring skills to Afriquia GazHe added that the transition phase will be completed in a few weeks.
TotalEnergies in Mauritania is active in the exploration and production of oil and gas. Present in the country since 1999, the French company also offers service stations through 40 outlets.
With 30% of its oil and gas production coming from Africa, TotalEnergies has a strong presence on the continent. However, in recent months the company has come under intense criticism in South Africa over an alleged gas drilling licence 3 billion this month.
A South African climate NGO had launched the campaign calling on the company to stop calling the transition from oil to gas a 'clean transition'.
TotalEnergies was navigating muddy waters long before the South African campaign. In September this year, South African billionaire Johann Rupert made international headlines for having liquidated its shares in the French giant. Rupert's investment vehicle held a 25% stake in TotalEnergy.
