Le Maroc lance les appels d'offres pour le gazoduc Nigeria-Maroc en 2025

Morocco has announced its intention to launch invitations to tender in 2025 for the Moroccan segment of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP), marking a decisive step in this ambitious transcontinental energy project. These calls for tender will cover the construction, operation and maintenance of the 1,672 kilometres of pipeline crossing Moroccan territory, in accordance with the 2025 Action Plan of the Office national des hydrocarbures et des mines (ONHYM).

The 5,600-kilometre NMGP aims to link Nigeria to 16 West African countries, eventually connecting to the Morocco-Europe gas pipeline and integrating it into the European gas network. It will be implemented in stages, with an initial phase involving Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal. This phased approach will optimise resources and ensure gradual progress towards the objectives set.

The main participating countries, including Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, have already signed agreements to support this strategic initiative. In 2024, new gas transport agreements are expected to be signed, paving the way for subsequent phases that will extend the pipeline to other West African nations.

The NMGP is also designed to meet major energy security challenges. It will strengthen energy supplies to African countries while offering a strategic alternative for supplying Europe with natural gas.

Once completed, the project is expected to benefit more than 340 million people, fostering regional economic integration and socio-economic development. By providing a reliable source of energy, it will help to diversify local economies, improve energy infrastructure and reduce dependence on expensive or polluting energy sources.

To ensure the success of this monumental initiative, a private company will be set up to oversee the construction, operation and maintenance of the pipeline. This approach is designed to ensure efficient management and attract private investment to finance the various phases of the project.

The NMGP is much more than just an energy infrastructure. It embodies a vision of regional cooperation and sustainable development, while positioning Africa as a key player in the global energy transition.

With the launch of tenders in 2025, the project is entering a concrete phase that confirms its viability and potential to transform the energy and economic landscape of West Africa and beyond.
