Namibia: Technip Energies consolidates diversified energy mix

Following a series of successful project developments in Mozambique and Senegal, the French engineering and technology company reaffirms its commitment to Africa's energy future with a myriad of developments in Namibia

French engineering and technology company Technip Energies has become the partner of choice for African oil and gas producers, deploying its state-of-the-art technology and developing a series of large-scale projects on the African continent. To date, the company has delivered over 100 projects in Africa, offering technology solutions, products and services as well as turnkey contracts and construction expertise in the downstream, liquefied natural gas (LNG), gas-to-power, mining and metals and offshore industries. In this context, Technip Energies is a key driver of large-scale hydrocarbon projects in Africa, and the company has now turned its attention to the promising Namibian sector.

Namibia is expected to experience unprecedented growth in the oil, gas and renewable energy industries due to significant oil and gas discoveries in 2022 and 2023 and significant green hydrogen potential. While Technip's footprint in Namibia dates back to 2008, when the company won a contract for a uranium processing plant in the west of the country (closed in 2012), large-scale oil and gas discoveries in 2022 by Shell and TotalEnergies signaled new opportunities for the French company in the country's energy sector.

In February 2022, global energy majors Shell, TotalEnergies and Qatar Energy announced two oil and gas discoveries in the Graff and Venus discoveries, within weeks of each other. According to global market information company Wood Mackenzie, Namibia's deepwater discoveries contributed the highest value of global discoveries in 2022, alongside discoveries in Guyana and Brazil, clearly showing the important role these discoveries will play in kick-starting the country's long-term socio-economic growth. . At the 2022 edition of the continent's premier oil and gas industry event, the African Energy Week (AEW), where Namibia and Technip Energies played a central role, the French company signed an agreement with the national oil company NAMCOR to collaborate on the development of the two discoveries.

« Nous sommes ravis des deux découvertes faites cette année et souhaitons entamer des discussions avec une entreprise de classe mondiale comme Technip Energies pour voir comment ils peuvent nous aider à mettre ces découvertes en service », a déclaré Immanuel Mulunga, PDG de NAMCOR lors de la cérémonie de signature. .

Technip's representative and SVP Gas and Low Carbon Energy, Loic Chapuis, added: "Namibia is a key target for us and the development of these discoveries aligns perfectly with our agenda as Technip Energies. We are delighted to be sharing technology with Namibia and believe that this MoU will help to improve the technology in Namibia.

For Namibia, the Technip Energies partnership signals new opportunities for accelerated oil and gas development. By leveraging the company's expertise in LNG and offshore solutions and its experience as a successful project developer in Africa and around the world, the country is well positioned to usher in a new era of market growth through hydrocarbons. With Technip Energies' expertise in the engineering and construction of all types of LNG plants - including large-scale, onshore and offshore, as well as in remote and challenging environments - Namibia's burgeoning oil and gas developments are in good hands.

"Having Technip Energies as a partner in the development of Namibia's large-scale oil and gas projects is not only a testament to the company's role in Africa's energy future, but also demonstrates Namibia's commitment to developing its oil and gas resources. Technip brings to Namibia a strong track record of success in the industry and Namibia has much to learn from the company. The Memorandum of Understanding signed between the country and Technip in 2022 represents a crucial step in getting these large-scale discoveries off the ground and ushering in a new era of project success in Namibia. We look forward to more agreements like this one being signed at the 2023 AEW," said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the ACS.

However, Technip's expertise and footprint in Namibia transcends the oil and gas industry, with the company playing an important role in the development of green hydrogen. Representing a very promising green hydrogen market due to significant potential for solar and wind deployment, Namibia is undertaking an ambitious green hydrogen program alongside a number of regional and global partners. To date, Technip is working on a conceptual study for the production of green ammonia with a capacity of between 200 and 400 MW from solar and wind power. As the country's green hydrogen market develops, Technip is expected to play a central role in driving the developments.

From natural gas to green hydrogen to renewables, AEW 2023 offers the best platform for high-level players to discuss the future of the energy sector in Africa. This year's event will have an even greater focus on gas and deal-making, with growing markets such as Namibia representing key discussion points. Join industry experts, governments and leading investors at this year's AEW, which takes place from 16-20 October in Cape Town.
