Sonatrach to build a new refinery in Africa

Algerian energy giant Sonatrach has confirmed its intention to build a new oil refinery in Niger, consolidating its strategy of expansion and diversification on the African continent. The project, which is part of a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening Niger's energy sovereignty and boosting regional development, bears witness to Algeria's growing role as a key player in the African energy sector.
During a visit to Niamey, a Sonatrach delegation presented details of the project, which includes the construction of a refinery initially designed to process 30,000 barrels per day, with the capacity to expand to 100,000 barrels per day. Located in the Dosso region, the facility will also include a petrochemical complex to maximise the value of local hydrocarbons.
This project represents a strategic investment for Niger, which aspires to strengthen its energy independence and reduce its dependence on imports of refined petroleum products.
Niger's Oil Minister, Sahabi Oumarou, stressed the importance of this collaboration, which promises to transform Niger's energy and economic landscape:
"This project marks a decisive step towards our energy sovereignty. It will create jobs, stimulate local content and attract foreign investment to our country.
Sonatrach, with its expertise in refining and petrochemicals, is committed to providing technical support and sharing its know-how with Niger. Specialised training for Nigerien engineers and technicians will be organised in Algeria, strengthening local capacities and promoting South-South cooperation.
The construction of this refinery is more than just an energy project. It will generate significant economic benefits, including :
- Direct and indirect job creation during the construction and operation phases.
- Development of local infrastructure, such as roads and transport networks.
- Attract foreign investment by better integrating Niger into regional energy value chains.
This project confirms Sonatrach's role as a catalyst for energy development in Africa. Since its return to Niger last August, the Algerian company has positioned itself as a strategic partner, particularly in initiatives such as the trans-Saharan gas pipeline, which aims to link Nigeria, Niger and Algeria to export gas to Europe.
As Africa seeks to fully exploit its energy potential, projects such as the Sonatrach project in Niger illustrate the importance of enhanced regional cooperation. This ambitious project contributes not only to Niger's energy independence, but also to the vision of a more energy self-sufficient and prosperous Africa.
With its proven expertise and willingness to work closely with its African partners, Sonatrach is positioning itself as a pillar of the continent's energy transformation.
