Niger is embarking on a major industrial transformation project with the launch of preliminary works for the construction of a new oil refinery. This project, the result of a strategic partnership with the Canadian refining group Zimar, marks a turning point for the Nigerien economy and its oil sector.
The Nigerien government, in collaboration with Zimar, has launched the first phase of this ambitious project, aimed at building a petrochemical complex and an oil refinery. Located in the Dosso region, in the south-west of the country, this complex will be much more efficient than the old Niger refinery, which has a capacity of 100,000 barrels per day. The new refinery will have double the capacity, boosting national oil production and improving the country's self-sufficiency.
Prior to the full launch of construction, a feasibility study is underway, conducted by Nigerian experts in collaboration with other partners. The study, which is expected to last three months, will serve to confirm the technical, economic and environmental aspects of the project. Once the results have been validated by the Niger Ministry in charge of oil, construction proper can begin. The construction phase is expected to last 17 months.
The launch of this project augurs a promising future for Niger's oil sector. By increasing its refining capacity, the country hopes not only to better meet its domestic needs, but also to position itself as a key player in the field of oil refining in West Africa. The project is also expected to boost the local economy, creating jobs and generating considerable revenue from the increased production of refined oil.
In addition to this future complex, Niger already has an operational refinery in Zinder, with a capacity of 20,000 barrels per day, which continues to contribute to the growth of the sector.
With its ambition to strengthen its industrial infrastructure and better manage its natural resources, Niger is taking a decisive step towards sustainable economic development. The new refinery at the heart of this project should become a pillar of the national economy, with positive spin-offs for the country as a whole. The partnership with the Zimar Group, with its expertise in the field, is a major asset for the success of this strategic project.
