Nigeria - Morocco: Feasibility study and pipeline route finalised

The ambitious Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, designed to transform access to energy in West Africa and beyond, is making great strides forward. During an oral question session at the Council of Councillors, the Moroccan Minister for Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, announced that significant progress had been made, marking a decisive step towards making this strategic initiative a reality.
This mega-project, which aims to link Nigeria's vast natural gas reserves to Morocco, with a potential extension to Europe, is expected to benefit around 400 million people in 13 countries. By improving access to energy in the region, it promises to stimulate economic development and enhance energy security.
Minister Benali revealed that the last ministerial meeting resulted in the approval of an agreement between the participating countries, as well as the host country agreement. These signatures represent a major step forward, consolidating the regional cooperation needed to implement the project. "These agreements testify to the collective commitment of the nations involved to making this project a reality," said Ms Benali.
The project, which stretches over thousands of kilometres, is designed to be carried out in several phases. The initial feasibility and engineering studies have been finalised, as has the determination of the optimal pipeline route. These essential technical steps now allow us to move on to the institutional and financial structuring phase.
Central to this phase is the creation of a special purpose company, involving Morocco and Nigeria, to oversee the implementation of the project. This entity will be responsible for coordinating efforts and finalising operational details. The final investment decision, a crucial milestone, is expected by the end of 2025, according to the Minister.
In addition to its role in improving access to energy, the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline is seen as a catalyst for regional integration and sustainable development. By linking Nigeria's energy resources to the Moroccan and European markets, the project could redefine the region's energy dynamics, while promoting economic opportunities for the countries it passes through.
The Moroccan government, in partnership with Nigeria and the other participating nations, continues to mobilise the necessary resources to ensure the success of this major project. As the date for the final investment decision approaches, all eyes are on this initiative, which could mark a turning point for West Africa.
