Specialist offshore drilling contractor Northern Ocean has announced the signing of a contract with a subsidiary of Rhino Resources for the use of the Deepsea Mira semi-submersible platform. The contract, which will commence in mid-July 2025, marks a new phase in drilling operations off the coast of Namibia.
The contract includes one firm well for Rhino Resources, one firm well for another operator and three optional wells, representing an estimated 112 days of firm time. The projected value of the agreement is approximately $40 million. Rhino Resources will use the Deepsea Mira rig to drill the Volans-1X exploration well, the third consecutive well on the PEL85 licence, together with its partners NAMCOR, Korres Investments and Azule Energy.
Northern Ocean has worked closely with Rhino Resources and Halliburton, both of whom are recognised for their commitment and execution capabilities in Namibia. This cooperation emphasises strong local content, a key aspect supported by the Namibian government. "We are delighted to be working with Northern Ocean, Exceed and Halliburton to ensure the success and safety of this exploration well. This strategic contract for Deepsea Mira demonstrates our commitment to the development of Namibia and its upstream sector," said Travis Smithard, CEO of Rhino Resources.
Built in 2019, the Deepsea Mira is a sixth-generation semi-submersible drilling platform designed by Moss Maritime CS60E. Featuring dynamic positioning and anchor mooring, it is capable of operating in moderate to extreme environments, with a maximum water depth of 3,000 metres. Owned by Northern Ocean, the platform is managed by Odfjell Drilling, a renowned Norwegian company.
This new contract allows Deepsea Mira to extend its operations in Namibia, following a successful campaign with Total. Northern Ocean stands out as the only drilling contractor to have maintained a continuous presence in the country over the past two years. "NOL and Odfjell Drilling continue to demonstrate their commitment to Namibia, supporting the development of local capacity and strengthening our position in the industry," said Arne Jacobsen, Northern Ocean's Managing Director.
This contract illustrates Namibia's growing attractiveness for oil and gas exploration activities, as well as the commitment of players in the sector to invest in projects with high local added value. With the support of the Namibian government, Northern Ocean and its partners continue to play a key role in the development of the country's upstream sector.
