The oil and gas company Kosmos Energy has announced that it has increased its working interest to 90% and taken over the development of the "world-scale" Yakaar-Teranga gas discoveries offshore Senegal. The increase in working interest follows the BP output from the field.
According to Kosmos Energy, Yakaar-Teranga is one of the world's largest gas discoveries in recent years and contains around 25,000 billion cubic feet (Tcf) of premium gas, with negligible carbon dioxide content and minimal impurities, reducing the need for future transportation/liquefaction processing.
The development concept currently envisaged is an offshore development producing around 550 million standard cubic feet of gas per day with domestic gas transported by pipeline to the coast and liquefied export volumes on a floating LNG tanker.
"As concept optimization progresses, our goal is for PETROSEN to participate as an equal partner in the entire value chain with a greater vested interest. Kosmos and PETROSEN plan to evaluate potential partnership strategies with the aim of creating an aligned partnership with the necessary upstream elements and midstream expertise, combined with access to cost-effective financing and exposure to end markets," the company added.
Andrew G. Inglis, Chairman and CEO of Kosmos Energy, said: "Increasing our working interest and taking over the operation of Yakaar-Teranga represents a major value-creation opportunity for Kosmos. Yakaar-Teranga is one of the jewels in Senegal's growing energy sector, and this aligned partnership enables Kosmos and PETROSEN to accelerate the development of a competitive gas project in support of Senegal's goal of providing universal and reliable access to low-cost energy.
The General Manager of PETROSEN, Upstream, Thierno Seydou Ly said: "We are delighted to be working with Kosmos, which has brought a fresh approach to the development of Yakaar-Teranga, as well as new thinking on how PETROSEN can participate as an equal partner. Yakaar-Teranga is a strategic project and a key asset for the government's "Gas-To-Power" and "Gas-To-Industry" initiatives, which aim to provide affordable, abundant and cleaner energy as part of the country's "Plan Sénégal Émergent". With a streamlined and aligned partnership, we look forward to moving the project forward, increasing PETROSEN's expertise through knowledge and skills transfer, and bringing economic, social and environmental benefits to the people of Senegal.
