Senegal - Mauritania: Gimi FLNG receives first gas from GTA field

Golar LNG Limited has announced the receipt of gas from the BP-operated FPSO at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, located offshore Mauritania and Senegal. This milestone marks the start of full commissioning of the Gimi floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit.
Prior to this acceptance, gas from the British Sponsor LNG carrier was used to undertake advanced commissioning work. Now, with the actual injection of gas from the FPSO, operations can progress towards full commissioning.
The first LNG export cargo is expected in the first quarter of 2025, while the full commercial operation date is scheduled for the second quarter of 2025, subject to the satisfaction of all required conditions.
The injection of the first gas into the Gimi FLNG will lead to the final upward adjustment of the commissioning rate, in line with the commercial reset agreed in August 2024. This adjustment will trigger the start of the 20-year lease and operating agreement. This contract represents a major economic opportunity, unlocking around $3 billion of adjusted EBITDA (Golar share). Recognition of the contractual payments, comprising capital and operating elements, will be reflected in both the company's balance sheet and income statement.
Located around 40 kilometres offshore, the GTA project is one of the deepest offshore developments in Africa, exploiting gas resources at depths of up to 2,850 metres. The GTA FPSO, designed to handle more than 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, plays a key role in the production phase.
Once fully operational, phase 1 of the GTA project is expected to produce around 2.3 million tonnes of LNG per year, strengthening the position of Senegal and Mauritania as major players in the international gas market.
BP is the lead operator of the GTA project alongside Kosmos Energy, Petrosen and Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures. These strategic partners play a crucial role in the success of the project and its contribution to the local economy.
The GTA project, with the commissioning of the Gimi FLNG, represents a significant step forward in the development of the gas sector in West Africa, strengthening national capacities and creating new economic opportunities for the region.
