Sénégal : Senelec lance la conversion au gaz naturel des centrales thermiques dans le cadre du "Gas-to-Power"

Société nationale d'électricité du Sénégal (Senelec) has announced the start of operations to convert its 335-megawatt Bel Air thermal power stations to natural gas. This initiative, which is part of the national "Gas to Power" strategy, will run from 13 to 19 May 2025, and will entail a temporary shutdown of the facilities, temporarily reducing electricity generation capacity nationwide.

This project marks a decisive stage in the exploitation of domestic gas resources resulting from recent offshore discoveries, notably on the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA), Sangomar and Yakaar-Teranga blocks, from which the first extractions have already begun. By drawing on these resources, Senegal aims to reduce its energy bill, limit its dependence on imported fuels and consolidate its energy sovereignty.

The conversion of the Bel Air power stations is accompanied by structural investments, such as the modernisation of the Cap des Biches power station, the development of pipelines to transport natural gas and the transformation of existing infrastructure, such as the Sendou power station. These initiatives are based on public-private partnerships with major players such as West African Energy, Technip Energies and Baker Hughes, supported by institutions such as the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank.

This energy transition promises significant benefits: reduced public subsidies, improved industrial competitiveness thanks to more affordable energy, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. However, it faces a number of challenges, including the risk of delays in implementing infrastructure, the need for transparent management of gas revenues, and the need to integrate climate imperatives into the global effort to combat climate change.

Senelec calls on users to show understanding during this transition period, stressing that these efforts are aimed at guaranteeing sustainable, affordable and secure access to electricity for the entire Senegalese population. This transformation of the energy sector positions Senegal as a key player in the responsible use of its natural resources.
