Senegal is increasing transparency in the management of its mines.

The Minister of Energy, Oil and Mines, Birame Souleye Diop, reaffirmed on Tuesday the need for greater transparency in the management of Senegal's mining resources. Speaking at the opening ceremony of a workshop devoted to drafting the Mining Sector Development Policy Letter 2025-2029, he stressed that rigorous governance is essential if the sector's wealth is to benefit the entire population while promoting sustainable economic growth.
"We must ensure that our mining resources are managed transparently and fairly, guaranteeing profits that benefit the entire population and support sustainable economic growth", said Mr Diop. His comments highlight the government's desire to strengthen trust between local communities, investors and international partners.
The government is thus committed to promoting more transparent management of natural resources, with the ambition of making the extractive sector a genuine lever for economic development. Among the targeted sectors, phosphates and construction materials play a key role in this strategy.
The aim of the workshop, reported by Sud Quotidien, is to create a platform for discussion on the strategic directions and priority actions to be taken in the mining sector between now and 2029. This initiative reflects the authorities' desire to involve all stakeholders in developing inclusive and effective policies.
Mr Diop also stressed the importance of making optimum use of resources in order to maximise their impact on the national economy. He recalled that the energy and mining sectors are fundamental pillars in achieving the country's socio-economic development objectives.
In conclusion, this renewed commitment by the government marks a decisive step towards more efficient and transparent management of mining resources. The ultimate aim remains to improve the living conditions of the population and strengthen Senegal's economic sovereignty.
