Thiam & Associés opens Abidjan office with specialist expertise in mining and energy law

Thiam & Associés, a leading African law firm recognised for its expertise in natural resources and energy, is taking a major step forward in its development with the opening of a new office in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Founded in 2017 by Baba Hady Thiam, the firm has established itself as a trusted partner for local and international clients, particularly in the mining and energy sectors in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Abidjan office will be headed by Gilles Kouamé, a chartered legal adviser and new partner. With more than 15 years' experience with the Big Four firms PwC Tax & Legal and KPMG in Côte d'Ivoire, Gilles Kouamé brings in-depth expertise in mergers and acquisitions, transactional taxation and the mining, oil and energy sectors. "Joining Thiam & Associés is an exceptional opportunity", said Gilles Kouamé. "I was attracted by the firm's vision, which combines strong local roots with an international outlook. Thanks to our dynamism and our in-depth knowledge of the regional context, we are in a position to offer first-rate support, combining excellence, proximity and international standards."

Thiam & Associés has distinguished itself by its involvement in major projects across the continent. The firm recently advised China BaoSteel Group on the Simandou project in Guinea, a $15 billion mining project involving the exploitation of one of the world's largest iron ore deposits, as well as the construction of rail and port infrastructure. With the start of operations imminent, this project illustrates the firm's ability to manage complex and strategic transactions. In the energy sector, Thiam & Associés supported Karpowership in the deployment of innovative energy solutions in Gabon, Côte d'Ivoire and the Republic of Guinea, consolidating its expertise in delivering impactful results.

In addition to its involvement in the energy sector, Thiam & Associés has established a reputation for excellence in mining law in sub-Saharan Africa. The firm represents international mining exploration and development companies, lenders and host governments at all stages of mining projects, from initial exploration to development, financing, production and marketing. This includes obtaining mining titles, negotiating mining agreements, and drafting purchase, supply and leasing contracts. This global approach guarantees clients integrated support tailored to the unique challenges of the African mining sector.

The opening of the Abidjan office reflects Thiam & Associés' ambition to strengthen its presence in Africa's major economic centres. "We are delighted to welcome Gilles to our team," said founding partner Baba Hady Thiam. "His expertise and in-depth knowledge of the Ivorian market will strengthen our ability to meet the needs of an increasingly demanding international clientele requiring global, multi-jurisdictional solutions. Our move to Abidjan, a key business location, is part of this dynamic. This key step in our development will be followed by the opening of new offices in other major African capitals, because our ambition is to be present where our clients do business.
