In 2022, Algeria led natural gas production in Africa, closely followed by Egypt and Nigeria. Here are the 10 most productive natural gas fields on the continent this year, according to data from the Upstream Oil & Gas Database :

1. Zohr (Egypt)

Located in the Mediterranean Sea, this field, operated by Petrobel and owned by BP, Eni, Mubadala Investment Co, and Rosneft Oil Co, produced 2,610.59 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) and utilized 23.42% of its total recoverable natural gas reserves. Production is expected to continue until 2046.

2. Hassi R'Mel (Algeria)

This field, located in Laghouat and operated by Sonatrach, produced 3,015 mmcfd, using 84.01% of its reserves. Production is expected to continue until 2046.

3. Rhourde Nouss (Algeria)

Found in Illizi and also operated by Sonatrach, this field has produced 1,080.75 mmcfd, with 74.04% of its reserves utilized. Production is estimated until 2056.

4. Nooros (Egypt)

Located in the Nile Delta and operated by Petrobel for BP and Eni, the field produced 1,058.19 mmcfd, using 32.42% of its reserves. Production is scheduled until 2070.

5. Alba (Equatorial Guinea)

Located in the Gulf of Guinea and operated by Alba Equatorial Guinea Partnership for Chevron, GEPetrol, and Marathon Oil, the field produced 1,006.6 mmcfd, utilizing 69.75% of its reserves. Production will continue until 2049.

6. West Nile Delta (Egypt)

In the Mediterranean Sea, this field owned by BASF, BP and LetterOne Holdings, and operated by BP Egypt Co, produced 999.34 mmcfd, using 23.95% of its reserves. Production is estimated until 2049.

7. Gbaran Ubie Phase 2 (Nigeria)

Located in Bayelsa and operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria for Eni, NNPC, Shell, and TotalEnergies, the field produced 889.2 mmcfd, with 36.24% of its reserves utilized. Production is expected to continue until 2052.

8. Western Libya Gas Project: Wafa and Bahr Essalam (Libya)

Located in Wadi Al-Shatii, this field operated by Mellitah Oil & Gas for Eni and National Oil produced 765.41 mmcfd, using 67.3% of its reserves. Production is scheduled until 2054.

9. Alrar (Algeria)

The Illizi field, operated by Sonatrach, produced 724.23 mmcfd, with 77.91% of its reserves utilized. Production is expected to continue until 2048.

10. Tinrhert project (Algeria)

Also in Illizi and operated by Sonatrach, this field produced 684.85 mmcfd, having utilized 10.86% of its reserves. Production is estimated until 2055.

These fields testify to the significant contribution made by Algeria, Egypt and Nigeria to Africa's overall natural gas production.
