Mauritania: 3rd edition of MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power opens in Nouakchott

The MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power 2023 conference opened on Tuesday in Nouakchott, Mauritania, marking the start of two days of debates and transactions in the MSGBC region's energy sector. Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani attended the opening ceremony.

Mauritania's Minister of Energy, Nani O. Chrougha, underlined Mauritania's efforts to become a major producer and exporter of natural gas. He stressed the need to work at various levels, including attracting investment, improving the business environment, developing skills, as well as governance and infrastructure.

Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries, spoke of the future increase in global energy demand and the importance of reducing emissions, while highlighting Mauritania's potential role in meeting this demand.

APPO's Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim discussed the challenges of financing hydrocarbon projects in Africa, announcing the forthcoming creation of an African Energy Bank in partnership with Afreximbank.

NJ Ayuk, from the African Energy Chamber, highlighted regulatory reforms in the region, encouraging investment in various energies in Mauritania.

Major projects in the region, such as the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project and the development of the Sangomar oil field, as well as the green hydrogen initiative in Mauritania, were highlighted. Gordon Birrell of bp highlighted the progress of the GTA project, and Mark Crandall of CWP Global expressed his enthusiasm for the potential of green hydrogen in Mauritania.

Finally, the conference, under the theme "Expanding energy opportunities in Africa's new frontiers", represents a key forum for the MSGBC's energy sector.
