Mauritania joins the Organization of Gas Exporting Countries GECF

La vingt-cinquième session du conseil des ministres du forum des pays exportateurs de gaz (GECF), tenue mardi à Malabo (Guinée Équatoriale), a approuvé l’adhésion de la Mauritanie à l’organisation, en tant que membre observateur.

"Our country's membership of this forum, which brings together 19 countries representing 72% of the world's total gas reserves, confirms the significant potential and promising prospects Mauritania has in the gas field."

It is also the mark of an integrated vision developed by the government to ensure the rational and responsible exploitation of gas resources, as part of the role that Mauritania can play in light of the new energy transition and energy mix.

Thanks to its energy vision, the Mauritanian government is aiming for universal access to low-carbon, reliable and low-cost energy.

The country is preparing to start producing gas from the GTA "Great tortue Ahmeim" field with Senegal by the end of the first quarter of next year.

Mauritania was represented at the session by the Secretary General of the Ministry, Mr Ahmed Salem Ould Bouhada, and the Director of Hydrocarbons, Mr Moustapha Bechir.

This forum provides a framework for the exchange of experience and information between member countries, and seeks to build a mechanism for more meaningful dialogue between gas producers and consumers in the interests of stability and security of supply and demand on world natural gas markets.

In accordance with the GECF's statutes, the Forum aims to support its members' sovereign rights over their natural gas resources and their ability to develop, preserve and use these resources for the benefit of their peoples, through the exchange of experience and the transfer of technology.

The Forum comprises 11 member countries - Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad & Tobago and Venezuela - and seven observer countries - Angola, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Malaysia, Norway, Peru and the United Arab Emirates.
